Kahului, HI US - History: Historical Venture Into A Scenic Destination Of Hawaii

Kahuili, in the Maui county of Hawaiian Islands, has delighted visitors with its natural beauty and picturesque landscapes for over a decade. It has traditionally been the epicenter of trade across the seas with traders docking the ships on these deep water ports for business and trade. Often, this place served as a recreational spot for these traders. The commerce and the industry have only grown since the time of King Kamehamehama I and have developed into a destination for tourists. As the fishing trade ended, it brought an era of other industries such as agriculture and various farms.

The history of Kahului dates back to 1850s when it was established by Henry Baldwin and Samuel Alexander as part of purchase of land between Makawao and Paia to grow sugar. It was also termed as the dream City by the workers.

However, irrigation difficulties due to scarcity of water nearby forced them to look for a canal about 20 miles away. This work, which was started in 1876, was completed within two years. This led to a boom in the irrigation sector and only brought to fore more revolution in the field of agriculture and additional industries. With advancement in industries, employment and settlement also enlarged and slowly resulted in building of the community. Despite being hit by a bubonic plague in 1900s and wiping off the settlement, it continued to grow.

Pineapples and sugar are very much still grown in these areas and form the agriculture base of the town. The deep water port only in this part of the world also provides for commerce and trade. The historical reference of sugar production can be seen in the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum located near the main town. An architectural monument, which encompasses the history, culture and heritage of the town, is also being developed to provide the tourists with all the details.

The growth only brought out construction of roads, markets and made this place as a major town. Addition of upcoming malls and international airport has strengthened the town even more and made it a destination for tourists, who seek peaceful and serene ambience. The present day town has the right blend of hotels, shopping complexes, natural landscape and country clubs, which offers itself to the world as a stopover during vacations.
