Kingston, Jamaica - Overview
Jamaica, in West Indies, is one of the picture perfect islands belonging to the Caribbean archipelago. The verdant greenery of the damp tropical forests crisscrossed by amazingly beautiful sharp streams, towering trees that filter the sweltering heat, abundance of cascading waterfalls, and other such topographical features have earned the island nation epithets like THE LAND OF STREAMS, THE COUNTRY OF ETERNAL SUMMER and the LAND OF REGGAE, RASTAFARIAN’S and CALYPSO.
The country is the third largest among the West Indian nations and boasts of a richly diversified topography that encompasses rocky coastlines, sun kissed beaches, surf and sea, and mountainous highlands. Rivers and deltas traverse the breezy and windy lowland landscape.
Kingston is the capital of this English speaking (former) British colony and the discovery of this picturesque nation is etched in the pages of every historical annal and dates back to the day when Christopher Columbus chanced upon its shores, mistakenly thinking he had arrived in India.
Thus, Kingston has a history as versatile as its geography. Kingston - the former British naval base is a veritable melting pot of rich culture and is alive with myriad of activities. If you visit Kingston - the Mecca of music, you have to sway to the beats of Reggae and calypso.
The city is steeped in the glorious history of a rich colonial heritage and numerous magnificent colonial architectural wonders, palaces, art galleries, museums, theaters etc. are standing testimonies of a splendid bygone era. This historical maritime piracy center is regularly lashed by gales and hurricanes.
Kingston is dotted with nightclubs, pubs and restaurants and also houses golden sun kissed beaches and cays, numerous beach rentals, luxurious private rental villas, sea resorts, hotels, a harbor across which lies the historical city of PORT ROYAL.
The main attractions of Kingston are the quaint fishing villages, vineyards producing world renowned Jamaican rum, crocodile safari, chocolate mulattoes and coffee plantations. Other top sights that may fascinate you are the unique limestone formations in the Cockpit County.
A very endearing picnic spot is the inviting beach by Discovery Bay. If you are interested in taking a tour down the coffee plantations, you may visit the Blue Mountains that offer a captivating view over the distant vistas.
The Blue and John Crow National Park is a veritable treasure trove of rare humming birds, buzzards and numerous endemic species of flora and fauna.
Some of the must-visits include the NATIONAL GALLERY, MUSEUM of BOB MARLEY, DEVON HOUSE and ruins of PORT ROYAL.
