New Delhi History, India
New Delhi became the capital of India after 1911. Before this, Calcutta was the capital of India, but due to the contribution of New Delhi in politics the British government took the decision of shifting the capital to New Delhi as it was easier to govern India from a place which was somewhat in the center of the country instead of a city which was located in the far east of the country. Reasons for New Delhi being made the capital of India were many but the few prominent ones were:
New Delhi had been the major hub during the ancient historical periods of India. Mughal Empire ruled India and had used Delhi as their capital and the governing city for the rest of the country between the years of 1799 and 1849.Delhi was the place which housed important politicians of the country which played major roles for the independence of the country. Delhi was located almost in the center of India and hence it was much easier for any government to administer India from Delhi instead of any other city which was part of eastern India, like the capital of those days, Calcutta.
Finally, after the draft passed, New Delhi was designed and planned next to what is now known as Old Delhi (which was laid by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan). As New Delhi was laid on the land, which was used by various rulers in the past, it has many historical monuments like Lodhi Gardens and the Jantar Mantar.
Once India became independent in 1947, New Delhi was controlled by a Chief Commissioner who had to answer to the Government of India. By 1956 New Delhi was made the union territory of India and place of Chief Commissioner was taken by Lieutenant Governor.
Constitution was amended in 1991 and finally New Delhi was given the official name of National Capital Territory of Delhi. Elections were conducted and the government of National Capital Territory of Delhi was made answerable to the central government which would be ruling the country. So, it was the Central Government which ruled the complete country but will have offices in New Delhi and the government of National Capital Territory of Delhi which too will have offices in New Delhi but will administer only the National Capital Territory of Delhi or just New Delhi.
