Actually, Michie Tavern was a restaurant as well as a commodity store dating back to 18th century. The historic building now has old stuff preserved for visitors to see. The tour at Michie Tavern begins with meeting the hosts that are dressed in 18th century attire. The visitors then proceed towards the museum followed by a walk down the memory lane within the old building.
Another great masterpiece is the Monticello designed by Mr. Jefferson of the University of Virginia way back in 1768. A name in the United Nation's World Heritage List, this classic Greek and Roman style masterpiece is a must see when in Charlottesville.
Then there is the Ash Lawn Highland, which was the home of James Monroe in 19th century. This huge impressive mansion is designed in Federal style and has an amazing location. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides and has stunning gardens nearby.

These vineyards have engrossing tasting arenas and offer a fantastic opportunity for picnics. Then there is Barboursville Vineyard nearby in Orange County. The winery is one of the best in the United States.
A visit to Staunton nearby (around 28 miles) is also worthwhile when you are in Charlottesville.
