Charlottesville History, Virginia
Located in the proximity of the river Rivanna (which is actually a tributary of River James) and on the western side of the Southwest Mountains, the city of Charlottesville has around 250 years of history backing it. It was during 1762 when the foundation of this city was laid down.
Charlottesville History -Formation
It was 1762 when the land for the formation of this city was rented by the government. Three Notched Road was a trade route along which the city foundation was laid down.
Three Notched Road is today famous by the name The United States Route 250. The city was stretched from Great Valley to Richmond thus covering a considerably huge area. During those days the wife of the ruling king (namely George III from the United Kingdom) was Queen Charlotte and hence the name of the city was to honor the queen.
Charlottesville History -When Charlottesville Faced Various Wars
It was during the famous Revolutionary War of America when the Convention Army was forcibly imprisoned here from 1779 till 1781, in the famous Albernarle Barracks.
Somehow this city was spared from the sufferings of the Civil War which America had to face. Yet, there were some misfortunes, as the burning out of the Charlottesville Factory, in 1865. Soon after the war, the factory was rebuilt and was called Woolen Mills but by 1962, it declared bankruptcy.
Charlottesville History -The Formation of the First Church for Blacks
It was during 1864 when the first ever black church was built in this city. Till then the African Americans weren’t permitted to build their own churches but this revolutionary step changed everything. Most of the African American churches of today have their routes related with that first church.
