Dayton, OH US - Overview: Gem City
Dayton, also known as the ‘Gem City’, is located in the Montgomery County of Ohio, with a population close to 160,000. The city has got a rich heritage of innovations and inventions and the recorded per capita is more than any other city of the nation. Some of the inventions include microfiche, stepladder, cellophane tape, space food, movie projector, gas masks, parking meters, airplane supercharger and parachutes. Since most contributions to the world of aviation were done here, Dayton is also recognized as ‘Birthplace of Aviation’.
A small group of settlers founded Dayton in April, 1796. In 1805, the town was incorporated and was named after Jonathan Dayton, captain in American Revolutionary War. Jonathan Dayton was also the signer of U.S. Constitution. City was home of pioneers in aviation, Wilbur and Orville Wright. Prior to their aviation success, they ran a bicycle shop in the city. Again, names like Paul Laurence Dunbar (Famous Poet) and John H. Patterson (founder of National Cash Register Corporation) also belonged to this wonderful city.
