Fremont Sights and Landmarks Guide, California
Fremont, CA is close enough to San Francisco and San Jose for visitors to be content to just use it as a hub from which to explore the Bay Area. But Fremont is also an interesting city on its own, and being located in the southeast area of the San Francisco Bay Area in Alameda County, it is outside the fog zone and enjoys a year round warm, temperate climate.
Fremont is a city amid farmland and grape vineyards that are nestled next to the hills of the Diablo Range, which provide good hiking and cycling, and also offer panoramic Bay Area views. Niles Canyon is a lovely part of these hills that has many idyllic picnic or relaxation areas.
Also located in these rolling hills is the Mission San José, one of the string of the historic missions built by Spanish priests and their followers throughout California. There is an accompanying museum that tells the tale of California’s settlement by the Spanish and the erection of several missions from Northern to Southern California.
In nearby Niles, the Niles Essenay Film Museum exhibits relics of when the area was home to the nascent film industry and studios were built here to shoot films starring Charlie Chaplin and others of this time. Saturday evenings offer screenings of silent films, particularly those that were filmed here.
Also on weekends, the popular Niles Canyon Railway, a well preserved turn of the century train, carries passengers through this scenic region and also offers a 'train of lights' over the Christmas Holiday.
In the upcoming years, target date 2011, Fremont will host an American League Baseball team, the popular Oakland Athletics, in its newly built Cisco Stadium. Fremont offered a pleasant, new site with more parking, plus a proximity to the affluent Silicon Valley to lure these perennial pennant contenders.
Other attractions are the many examples of Gold Rush era buildings that are preserved in Fremont and a walk around these gives one a flavor of the Old West. Also interesting remnants of the past are the ruins of the Palmdale Winery, built in the 1800’s but mostly destroyed by earthquake.
For those who like a glimpse into the past, Fremont offers several interesting excursions as an alternative to the face paced attractions of San Francisco.
