Techirghiol Travel Guide, Romania
First time you arrive in Techirghiol you are not impressed it is a quiet rudimentary place lacking great amenities or entertainment possibilities. You see the big lake that at first sight does not seem any different from any other lakes but after you find out about its wonders your impression will soon change. It's just like in the fairytales where the good things always hide behind a simple mask. The Romanians know about this place but the authorities did not do enough to promote it outside the country's borders maybe because they want to keep the secret to themselves or maybe because there is not enough money to invest in infrastructure and a proper restoration of the access area to the lake.
You'll see a lot of people coming to have a wonderful treatment. They usually come to the sanatorium with a medical recommendation from their doctor and this way they don't have to pay for the treatments and neither for the entrance to the lake which is not much anyway it is around 15 Euros. The lake side is surrounded by big rocks and access is not easy but there are those who do not care much about it and get in the water anyway as they do not want to pay for the entrance fee.
Conditions at the shaped up entrance are simple the rocks have been removed and sand was put in their place the wonder mud is at your disposal and you can use as much as you want you don't have to pay for it. The mud is taken from the bottom of the lake and put in big containers for the people to take. There are umbrellas and chairs toilets and showers.
If you want a real Romanian experience you can stay at "St. Maria" monastery that has great conditions it is very clean and beautiful. The monastery has a building for tourists who want have different treatments. There is a specialized doctor who examines you and recommends you the type of treatment you need. They also offer three meals a day and you can choose between the menu for lacto-vegetarians those suffering from diabetes and the ordinary menu.
Here you are offered both body and soul healing possibilities so if you happen to be on the Romanian seaside you should not miss out a visit to Techirghiol and if you still can't make it than at least buy a bottle of the mud that is sold on every beach in Romania to sample it. Of course it won't do wonders unless you follow a treatment for at least 10 days.
