Saint Petersburg Travel Guide, Russia

St. Petersburg in Russia got its name from Peter, The Great who founded this city in the year 1703. This vibrant cultural capital offers a unique blend of the Russian heritage combined with the modern European look. St. Petersburg in Russia offers a rich and varied experience to the travelers to explore this fascinating city. Some of its best attractions include its historic landmarks with lovely museums and cathedrals along with sprawling parks and lush gardens among many other sightseeing places to visit. 

This city enjoys the distinct reputation of being earlier labeled as the “Venice of the North”. It is known for some of its wonderful architecture that can be still be seen across its historical structures and old buildings. Today, St. Petersburg has turned into a major metropolis with plenty of hotels, restaurants, bars and cafes and exciting nightlife culture that is quite popular.

Location of St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg sits on the banks of the Gulf of Finland which serves as an inlet to the Baltic Sea across the Neva River. Some of the closest suburbs are situated adjacent to the Neva River which is also the city’s prime waterway. This city experiences the phenomena of “white nights” during the summer months when it has only a few hours of darkness a day. 

Getting around the city

The cheapest and economical means of exploring this city is by using the Metro. Besides this, the city is also served by trams and trolleybuses which run along certain routes and are convenient for traveling around a few places in the city. Car rentals are also available for rent from reliable car rental companies.

Another popular form of transport is the taxi mini-vans which have a seating capacity of 10-12 people and run on specified routes. 

Staying and accommodation

Service apartments are one of the most popular choices of travelers who wish to explore this city and it works out to be quite a cheap option as well. These service apartments include all the modern facilities required for a convenient and comfortable stay of the guests. Good hotels are also available in this city that suits different budget and lifestyle options ranging from the top class luxury hotels to the economical B&B hotels.  

Places of attraction

The State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace is one of most stunning attractions of St. Petersburg. This museum has a vast collection of historical treasures from the past which includes priceless works from Da Vinci, Michelangelo among others which is truly remarkable and a must visit. The Russian Museum is the best place to discover fascinating facts about the Russian art and history.

St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Church of the Savoir on the Spilled Blood and St. Petersburg Mosque are some of the popular cathedrals and churches that attract the tourists. This city also offers some good gardens and parks which are worth visiting like the Summer Garden, Taurida Garden and the Victory Park.

Travelers who wish to purchase some lovely Russian souvenirs can get them at some of the market side stalls and departmental stores. The most popular souvenirs are the Russian doll.
