Saint Petersburg Nightlife, Russia

St. Petersburg at Night

No visit to a major city is complete without experiencing its nightlife. St. Petersburg is no exception.

Once in the clutches of communism the night scene in St. Petersburg began emerging only in the late 1980s although it began in secret. In keeping up with the 80s music era, rock clubs were the places to be back then. Then in the 90s, warehouse parties became the norm in the United States and St. Petersburg followed suit.

Today St. Petersburg offers an eclectic selection of nightspots.

Restaurants

For those who'd like to pamper their palettes they can choose from an array of restaurants and cafes that offer choice cuisines. Among the trendy set or for those who want a taste of traditional Russian cuisine, there's Imbir Restaurant on Zagorodny Street. Here the food is good and the ambience is cozy with its subdued lighting.

The bohemians or thespian wannabes can make their way to Prival.com that was the meeting place for artists back in the 1920s. One can actually spend the entire day here as this versatile venue is a restaurant by day and transforms into a nightclub when the sun goes down!

Bars and Pubs

If you'd like to sit back, relax and sip a mug or glass of liquor, you'd enjoy the choices of bars and pubs that St. Petersburg has to offer. Giving you a taste of Ireland in Russia is Mollie's which resembles an Irish pub. This is the place for beer lovers and big eaters alike as Mollie's offers a wide selection of beers and food in hefty servings!

For the fun-loving casual set, there is XXXX Bar. The small but cozy bar's interiors are decked in funky décor from framed photos to posters and flags! If you really want to party and get happily hammered, the best time to drop by is on a weekend. With overflowing alcohol and a DJ spinning great tunes, who wouldn't have a blast in XXXX Bar?

Live Bands

Many establishments in St. Petersburg offer great music from band performances. If you're in the mood for local rock music, go to Fish Fabrique a part of 'Pushkinskaya 10' cultural center. Many aspiring Russian bands perform at Fish Fabrique as a launching ground to start their musical careers, so this is definitely the place if you want a taste of quality music.

For those who like jazz you'll also find a myriad of choices to get your fill of Russian jazz tunes. There's the Red Fox Jazz Café that features a live jazz band every evening. For the insomniacs you can visit the Jimmy Hendrix Blues Club which is open 24 hours a day. Here the live bands start performing when the clock strikes 12 so you'll be in for a treat for the rest of the night.

Theatre

The more cultured set can see a theatre performance or two in venues like the Akimov State Academic Comedy Theatre which features comedies and satires. If you'd like to watch a performance of the renowned Russian ballet, you can troop to the Mikhailovsky Theater which shows Tchaikovsky ballets such as the Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

Clearly, St. Petersburg's diverse nightspots are worth visiting and exploring. In post-communist Russia nightlife has never been more alive.
