Surigao, the Philippines – Overview: The Surfing Capital of the Philippines
Surigao, situated in the Philippines, is also known as Shangrila. It is the capital of Surigao del Norte. Earlier, it was called as Saliagao and later renamed by the immigrants. This province was founded on June 19, 1990.
The city faces in the direction of Phillippine Deep and enveloped by the Pacific Ocean and is a collection of islands that are located near the Asian continental side. The city is endowed with several aquatic reserves and minerals.
Climate
There is maximum rainfall, especially during the months of November to March. The city is also called as the “wettest city” in the entire country, as it receives rainfall for 223 days. Its average temperature is around 32.7 degrees. The average humidity of the city is 87%.
Culture
The natives of Surigao are God fearing and they firmly believe in long established customs and traditions. In spite of the stupendous development in science and technology, they believe in rituals, which play a dominating part in their vital lives. Surigaonon is the native dialect of the city.
Surfs, outlying beaches and islands add to the popularity of Suriago. The prominent tourist attractions include Punta Baluarte, Lisondra Rock Foundation, Basul Island, Buenavista cave and Mabua Pebble beach. Dancing, in tandem with the gigantic waves proves to be one of the most challenging adventure, something which is absent in urban jungles. It is seven hours away from Manila. The ferry ride to Siargo’s main port called as Dapa, is very famous and looked forward to by the tourists. During the off season, it also endows other exciting and thrilling opportunities like kayaking, diving, island hopping and many more.
Economy
The entire economic infrastructure of Surigao is based on farming, timber production and export of copra and fishing. Apart from it, tourism proves to be one of the brightest options for Surigao to accelerate its economic development

The air services of Asian Spirit, from Cebu to Surigao are available on every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and the Sunday. Along with it, the Philippines Airlines can be boarded, which flies from Manila to Butuan City, every day. Butuan City is at a distance of 2 hours bus ride from Surigao city.
