Jakarta
Jakarta is a city, and one of the 13,000 islands of the Republic of Indonesia. The population here is over 180 million, and comprises of more than 300 ethnic groups who collectively speak 200 different languages.
Being the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta is a confluence of representatives from all these ethnic groups and a city of contrasts with traditional and modern structures, the rich and poor and the sacred and worldly all lying side by side in the city.
The city covers most of Greater Jakarta, with an area of 637.44 sq. km. and is located on the northern coast of West Java. It is the center of industry, commerce and government, with a large network with Indonesia and the world.
Jakarta, the land of connectivity
Its strategic location makes Jakarta reachable by land, air and sea from all over Indonesia and the world and has a corresponding air, sea and rail transportation network. It boasts of the largest airport in the country, the most important harbor of Indonesia and its rich network of roads to other parts of Indonesia.
A look at the architecture gives an idea of the amount of effect outside influences has on the city. The oldest parts of Jakarta, known as Old Batavia were restored to its original state with the Taman Fatahillah Restoration Project in the early 1970s.
The Old Portuguese Church, the Town Hall and Supreme Court building have been rehabilitated into museums displaying rare items like old historical documents and Dutch period furniture.
Jakarta a popular tourist destination
The boom in luxury hotels, exciting nightlife, fine restaurants and modern shopping centers has mad the city a popular tourist destination. There are many tourist attractions to visit while in Jakarta like Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, island resorts in the Pula Seribu, their extensive beach complex called Ancol and their restored colonial period buildings.
The Taman Mini Indonesia Indah was built with the intenetion of portraying the various cultures of Indonesia through architectural forms of arts and tradition which prove the country’s motto of Unity in Diversity and freedom of Religion.
Jakarta both the regional and national government
Jakarta is a city that has managed to preserve its past, while working to the future. Today, it is one of the most famous metropolitan cities of Asia. You find skyscrapers in the city center and luxury hotels for vacationers. State of the art shopping centers, toll-roads and recreation complexes are all part of the city.
Transportation in Jakarta is efficient with it being the country’s industrial, political and cultural center. You find the country’s best educational facilities, cultural organizations and research institutes in the city. It is also the seat of both the regional and national government.
The welfare, lifestyle and quality of life of the people in Jakarta have improved with the development in the city. And it is the cultural richness and growth in Jakarta that has made it today one of the world’s leading capital cities.
