Pateros, Philippines - Overview: The duck eggs capital
Renowned for the duck raising industry and production of Balut (duck eggs), Pateros is the smallest municipality in Manila. Balut, which is the biggest tourist attraction in the city, accounts for 24% of the total industrial revenue and has been passed down from one generation to another. The city derived its name from “patos”, which means duck laying eggs and “pateros” stands for duck raisers. The city is also known for its shoe-making industry. It is surrounded by the Makati city, the Pasig and the Taguig. In addition to the traditional industries, the city also flaunts some big names in the corporate world.
Alfombra slippers
Pateros is equally famous for its Alfombra slippers, as manufacturing slippers was the original skills of the inhabitants in the region. Alfombra slippers are widely known for their quality both in and outside Pateros.
Location
Pateros is located about 14 kilometers to the southeastern part of Manila and north of river Pasig. The city occupies about 11 sq. km..
Culture
The city is vibrant and the same are its festivals, which are celebrated throughout the year. The Pateros Foundation Day is celebrated on March 29 every year to mark the incorporation of the city. The Holy week of Pateros takes place in the months of March and April. It is basically the last week before Easter. Following the holy week is the Santacruzan in May. This month-long flower festival is celebrated for paying homage to Virgin Mary.
Economy
Initially, agriculture formed one of the most important resources of generating revenue for Pateros. However, following commercialization in the town with increase in its population, there was a rapid decline in this field. Currently, manufacturing industries are playing an important role in the economy of the city. As per recent records, over 450 registered companies serve the city.
Sports
People living in Pateros accept sports and other forms of recreation as important factors for promoting good health and solidarity. Thus, different form of sports, which include basketball, table tennis, billiards, bowling and darts, are played in the city even though it lacks the presence of wide-open spaces for recreational activities.
