The city of Zacatecas is situated right in the center of Mexico and happens to be the capital for the state of Zacatecas. The name of this city was inspired from the historical word Zacatl which actually means Zacate that happens to be a rough natural fiber. To complete the name of the city the word ‘co’ was used which meant 'from the place of'. When you join both the words then what you get is the word Zacatecas meaning ‘the place where Zacate abounds’.

As per the census of year 2005 the population for the city of Zacatecas was around 123000 inhabitants. As per the same census the population for the municipality of Zacatecas was around 132000 inhabitants. The municipality of Zacatecas stretches over an area of around 444 kilometer square. The huge population of Zacatecas makes it the largest city in the state of Zacatecas although the city of Fresnillo has almost the same population as this city has. The municipality of Zacatecas isn’t the largest in the state of Zacatecas as the population for the municipality of Fresnillo is way above its population. Even the area of expansion for the Fresnillo is larger when compared to Zacatecas.

It was the presence of silver in around the land where today the city of Zacatecas stands that became the major reason why the city was formed. The Spanish rulers were quick to understand the importance of silver which was available in this region and hence they started to settle down in this area. This is the reason why today you will find touches of Spanish architecture in this city of Zacatecas.

The climate of Zacatecas is cold for most of the year and the temperature ranges between 50 F and 70 F. Zacatecas rarely experiences summer days though few days do experience hot temperatures. The rest of the year the temperature of this city makes life in this city wonderful for living.
