Veracruz History, Mexico

It was the year 1519 when the port, which is today the port for the city of Veracruz, was formed. It was Hernán Cortés who was responsible for laying the foundation of this port. He was the army leader responsible for conquering Mexico for the country of Spain and hence he was the first Spanish controller who landed on this land   today called Veracruz.

Before the arrival of the Spanish army this land, where today the city of Veracruz is situated, was formed by various kinds of sediments which are always carried by high level lands to lower lands via different rivers. These sediments made this land highly fertile for agricultural purposes. That is why people started to settle down on this land as they could use it for growing various vegetables.  The Mesoamerican civilization was famous by the name of Olmecs. This name was taken from an Aztec word.

Since the first control of Veracruz by the Spanish army, it was moved to different places 4 times. The original settlement of this city was Chalchihuecan islet. From this location, it was moved to Quiahuixtlan town situated nearby. Soon the officials faced many administrative problems in this area and hence it was then moved to the place where today La Antigua town is situated.

Later on, in the 16th century this port city was again moved to its current location which was Quiahuixtlan town. Finally, the officials realized that this old location was the best for this city of Veracruz. The viceroys Acevedo and Zuniga were the ones who thought of bringing back the city to its original location.

During the war of independence the city of Veracruz faced many attacks but it stood well against the enemies.
