Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl (or just Nezahualcóyotl in short) is a municipality and a city in the State of Mexico (which lies in the center of Mexico).

Nezahualcoyotl was a poet and king of a nearby territory called Texcoco and the city was named after him. The dry bed of Lake Texcoco was used as a settlement for the city.

Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl has a population of over 113600, whereas the municipal population is over 114000 as per the INEGI census conducted in the year 2005. Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl has the second highest municipal population in the State of Mexico after Ecatepec which has the highest population. The city’s population happens to be the eight largest in the country.

 Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl is 2220 metres above sea level.

The city has been considered as the most dangerous place in Mexico due to the high percentage of crimes which regularly occur the in the city. This crime factor has been an important reason for the low tourist flow and this has hurt the city in terms of economy. Government of Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl has taken some serious steps in the last couple of years to curb crime but the dirty name which it gained in the past won’t leave it that easily.

Although Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl might be the home of many crime scenes, it still stands proof of those days when it shone as a star in the history of Mexico.

José López Portillo, a football stadium, was built in 1981 in Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl and some games of 1986 FIFA World Cup were held in this stadium. José López Portillo is said to have a capacity of 28000. Similarly, the Symphony Band of Nezahualcóyotl and a Junior Symphony Orchestra is one of the only groups of its type in Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl. It comprises 45 members and it was launched in 1998.

A famous tourist spot is a cultural center named Jaime Torres Bodet which opened in the middle of 1987. Another monument of interest is the Municipal Palace (known as Palacio Municipal de Nezahualcóyotl, in Mexican). It has been built using modern technology and it is the center of all government offices.
