The city of Mérida (which is called as Tiho in today’s modern Mayan Language) happens to be the capital city for Yucatán which is part of Mexico. The city of Mérida is situated in the north western region of Yucatán State and in the Yucatán Peninsula. The city of Mérida is surrounded by Campeche from the western side, by Quintana Roo from the eastern side, by Chiapas from the southern side, and by the Gulf of Mexico from the northern side. The land which lies around the city of Mérida is full of scrubs and different henequen fields.
The city of Mérida is located in the proximity of the Tropic of Cancer and in the trade wind belt thus making it prone to windy surroundings. Winds usually prevail in the city of Mérida from the eastern section. Due to its proximity to the Tropic of Cancer the climate for the city of Mérida is hot and humidity can also be high in summer. As the city is located on the Yucatán Peninsula, its altitude is almost zero from the sea level thus contributing to the hot climate.
The average annual highest temperature for the city of Mérida is around 33 degrees Celsius although the highest temperature can touch the heights of around 38 degree Celsius in summer which is actually the month of May. The temperature for the city of Mérida is always somewhat hotter when compared to the neighboring coastal area and this is due to the proximity of this city to the Tropic of Cancer. The city experiences the rainy season between the months of June and October thus making life easy for the locals.
The residents of the city keep it very clean and many old buildings of this city are white. These two became the major reasons why the city of Mérida was tagged as the White City. It was the year 2000 when the city of Mérida was called the American Capital of Culture.
