Leon Travel Guide, Mexico
León (which was known as León de los Aldama) is the most populous city of Guanajuato (a state of Mexico). León also happens to be the fifth largest city of Mexico.
As per the census conducted by INEGI (National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Data Processing) in the year of 2005, León has a population of around 1137000 people; the metropolitan area (which comprises of neighboring municipalities of San Francisco del Rincón, Purísima del Rincón, and Silao) of León has a population of around 1635000 and the municipality of León has an area of 1278000 people. A large chunk of this population is made up of Argentinean immigrants and Lebanese immigrants
Club León is the city’s most professional soccer team. Club León happens to be one of the best teams in Mexico. It has been league champion for five times which proves the caliber of this team. Club León now plays in Primera División A. Club León’s official stadium is Nou Camp (which is also called as Estadio León in Mexican). The FIFA World Cup games in the year of 1970 and 1986 were held in Estadio León itself. International level soccer players like Pelé, Diego Maradona, Michel Platini, and Franz Beckenbauer have played in this famous stadium
Basketball has been another famous game of León. Lechugueros, the basketball team of León, was formed in year 2004 and it regularly plays for LNBP (Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional). Their favorite basketball court is Domo de la Feria (which was also called as Auditorio Municipal in its early years). León has many other professional basketball teams before the formation of Lechugueros like: Zapateros, Atléticos, Pony-León, Lechugueros (original franchise). These basketball teams used to participate in Circuito Mexicano de Básquetbol (CIMEBA in short) league which was one of the most important basketball leagues during 1970s and 80s.
Lastly, baseball has also been in the crazy brains of the people of León. It had two baseball teams namely Cachorros de León (during the year 1970s) and Bravos de León (during the year 1980s). Both these baseball teams of León used to play in Liga Mexicana de Beisbol league. Bravos did become champion in 1992 but due to financial crisis it was moved to another city. Since then no baseball team has played for the city of León.
León might not be such a huge tourist attraction, but their love of sports has put the city foreward and made León an important city for Mexico.
