Chetumal History, Mexico

The city Chetumal of is famous by the name of Chactemàal in Modern Mayan language. This means Place for Red Wood. Most of the political offices in the city of Chetumal are located in various historical monuments as the historical past of this city has been very busy due to the presence of various dynasties which kept fighting wars against each other.

The very initial hints for the existence of Chetumal are during the Pre - Columbian times. Pre - Columbian period is said to be that period when the European countries had not started to enter America. The Pre - Columbian period ended when Europeans entered America. It was during the Pre - Columbian period archeologists found the hints for a city named Chactemal which was being used as the capital city for the state of Maya. This city was found to be located on almost the same place where today the city of Chetumal is located. Even in many cases after the arrival of Europeans this city was referred to as Chetumal.

Their have been confusions on the originality of Chetumal’s settlement as another theory claims that the historical city of Chetumal was located on different side of River Río Hondo, on the side of Modern Belize. Still the Pre - Columbian existence for the city of Chetumal is considered to be the best proof for the times when the foundation for this city was laid.

The historical city of Chetumal was part of the war against the Spanish Army during the mid 16th century as during those days the Spanish Army was trying to enter the city of Chetumal. It was by the late sixteenth century when the city of Chetumal finally lost against the Spanish Army and when under their control.

Officially the city of Chetumal was formed in the year 1898 and was originally named as Payo Obispo. It was changed to Chetumal in the year 1936. This city had also witnessed a revolt during the 1840s which as a result forced all the Hispanic population to leave the city.
