Dublin Sights and Landmarks Guide, Ireland
Dublin is the center of Irish culture and history, and a charming destination for anyone planning a holiday tour to Ireland. It is one of the world’s oldest cities, with one of the earliest references to its existence noted in the astronomer Ptolemy’s notes around 140 A.D. In later times, until around three centuries ago, Dublin’s rapid development and the fact that Dublin Castle was the seat of the Irish government ensured that it was the largest city in the British kingdom after London. Its culture and character have been famously captured in the works of writers like Sean O’Casey and James Joyce. The city’s illustrious literary lineage also includes George Bernard Shaw and William Butler Yeats. Although Belfast overtook Dublin in terms of growth and population, the cityscape of Dublin has seen a lot of modernization since the Second World War. Dublin was voted the best European capital to live in during a BBC survey conducted in 2003.
The nightlife in Dublin is truly spectacular, perhaps because over half its population is currently less than twenty five years of age. To get a taste of the famous Irish pub culture, check out the vicinity of St Stephen’s Green, which is surrounded by pubs and restaurants. One of the most popular nightlife centers and a must visit destination on any tourist’s agenda is the Temple Bar district, which includes an assortment of pubs, theaters and other cultural hotspots. Some of the distinct features of Temple Bar include street art productions and gay bars.
Dublin is also internationally acclaimed for its music, being home to bands such as U2 and Boyzone, and it is common to see bands performing live on the streets and in small gatherings, in addition to larger concerts and musical events. For the more historically minded, there are plenty of castles and museums to visit. The Ghost Bus Tour is especially entertaining and atmospheric.
In terms of transport, the Dublin Bus company and Dublin Rail are great ways to get around the city cheaply. There is also the recently developed Luas tram network, which is limited in its reach but a good way to leisurely take in the sights that the city has to offer, although it has been criticized for its lack of connectivity. Safety is not an overt concern for tourists, but statistics show that Dublin has seen a spate of gangland killings and homicides in recent times, and has the highest crime rate in the country.
