Surakarta Nightlife, Indonesia

Surakarta, Indonesia, now more commonly referred to as Solo, is centered in the middle of the island of Java.  The city is deeply based in culture and almost one and a half million people live in Surakarta and the surrounding areas.

Nightlife can be found in Surakarta, but you must know where to look.  In addition to some clubs and bars, other activities such as bowling and an indoor tennis courts are popular. 

If you asked a local where the best place to go to dance was, you would probably be told Saraswati Bar or Mama Titin’s.  If you just want to sit, drink, and chat these are the places usually occupied by foreigners or recently transplanted natives:  Mama Titin’s, Manir’s Happy Restaurant, or Saraswati Bar at the Novotel.  There are also a number of rather seedy discos that should be avoided.  Ask around to see where some of the locals might recommend.

As for restaurants, Surakarta offers many choices.  You will find almost every type of food you could possibly want.  Some of the recommended choices are:  Rasa Mirasa for local Javanese, Mama Titin’s Sunda Kitchen for Sudanese, Bale Padi for excellent seafood, and Osolomio for Italian.  There are also street vendors all over the city and it is a great way to taste the flavor of Java

If you feel you are running out of things to do in the evening, consider stopping by one of the shopping malls in Surakarta.  Great souvenirs can be found and for very little money.  Stock up on shoes, bronze, and a wide array of beautiful fabrics.

Surakarta is a very interesting place to visit and take in the Indonesian culture.  People are usually very friendly and helpful.  Consider this city when you are booking your next vacation.
