Surabaya Sights and Landmarks Guide, Indonesia
Surabaya, Indonesia is a very historical and cultural city. You will find a number of unique tourist attractions, with something that will appeal to everyone.
One of Surabaya’s most famous attractions is called Monkasel and is a submarine monument. Tours are available and all decks are usually open, providing an interesting look into the interior of the sub. It stands as a monument to the many heroes in the Indonesian battles.
Tugu Pahlawan is also called the Hero’s Monument and is dedicated to the soldiers of the Independence War of Indonesia. There are numerous monuments to the military heroes of Indonesia, but this is one of the most visited. It is located in Taman Kebonrojo in the center of Surabaya. Next to this monument is a museum that is dedicated to the struggles of Surabaya.
The Red Bridge (Jambatan Merah) is rather unique since all of the railings are painted red. It had an important place in Surabaya’s history, as some of the most violent battles of the Independence War were fought near the bridge.
Surabaya also has its own Chinatown, but it is only one street in the city. All of the shops close at dark, unlike most of the other Chinatowns in the world.
Consider visiting the Muhammad Cheng Ho mosque as well. In the 1400’s, Admiral Cheng Hoe began to spread Islam across the city. Many Chinese followed Hoe, and the mosque is dedicated to him.
Surabaya Zoo is one of the largest in Southeast Asia and houses a large variety of tropical animals, such as zebra, monkeys, elephants, camels, and birds. This zoo is not often very well maintained, but some will gladly accept this fact to view the various animals.
