Set within the spectacular location amongst the hills and facing the Lampung Bay, from where your gaze can extend to as far as Krakatau, is the stunning city of Bandar Lampung. It is the perfect fusion of Telak Betung and Tanjung Karang. Telak Betung is the long-established port of this area whereas Tanjung Karang has the foundation of the administrative centre. While you will be traversing the Lampung province, you will find that the native people will constantly mention these two very popular destinations. When you arrive here from the different divisions of Sumatra, your destination is usually Rajabasa which is the local bus terminal.
Krakatau monument
The journey to the town is breathtaking when you see that the road-side is dotted with trees and canopies. The town has a lot to offer. Jalan Veteran is a small yet beautiful park which proudly flaunts the Krakatau monument. It is an enormous metal buoy that was a gift of the Lampung Bay waves in 1883. However, the tidal swell in the same year was followed by the eruption of Krakatau. This eruption brought disaster killing as many as 35,000 residents belonging to both the sides of the Strait. In August, a week long celebration takes place that commemorates the 1883 volcanic eruption of Krakatau. During this phase, you can see some excellent cultural performances, boat races, snorkeling and even kite flying! The volcanic island can be seen from Lampung and if you wish, you can take a guided tour to search closely the minerals belonging to the core of the earth that were hurled up by its creator. Several other sights and cenotaphs that are associated with the disaster can be also be viewed.
Museum Negeri Propinsi Lampung
This museum is located 1km south of Rajabasa bus terminal. It has a huge collection of object d'art which comprise of musical instruments like drums, figurines and other sculptures, jewelry and masks, and megalithic figures. You might need a guide to take you around the museum to understand the fine details because the labeling of the artifacts is in the local language.
Other attractions
Pulau Condong is situated in the southeast corner of Bandar Lampung. It is reachable through the Pasir Putih beach.
In the same area is the Pandang Cermin which can prove to be an enjoyable tour with some very beautiful scenery along the coastline.
The eastern part of the city contains ancient remains at the Pugung Raharjo. Over here you can find remnants of a fortified village and a few megalithic stones. Beside the Krakatau Monument on the Jalan Ikan Kakap, Thay Hin Bio is located. It is perfect Chinese temple and a must visit. The metaphorical statues and the red and golden decorations and draperies give this temple a typical Chinese appearance. Tanjung Karang will offer you with the radiant aspect of the city and its natives.
The top of Bukit Randu provides a panoramic view of the entire city and the Lampung Bay.
Getting around Bandar Lampung is fairly easy. The efficient and inexpensive public transport system is the best option. However ensure that you are fully equipped with the right information.
