Delhi, India - Overview
Delhi is the capital of India and was planned by Edwin Lutyens, a famous British Architect. New Delhi is also a financial and economical hub of India. It was a center of power for many Muslim dynasties and rulers.
The city of New Delhi has a big number of national institutions and it is also famous for its landmarks, tree-lined boulevards and wonderful travel destinations. All the major government institutes including Rashtrapati Bhavan, The Secretariat and major ministries are located in this city.
New Delhi has served as a political center of many empires including Mughal Empire. Initially, Calcutta was the capital of India in the British Raj, later a proposal was made to the British Government and the capital of India was shifted from Calcutta to New Delhi.
After India became independence from Britain, New Delhi was administered by the Chief Commissioner appointed by the Government of India. Now New Delhi is governed by New Delhi Municipal council established by the government of India.
The temperature varies from 40 C in summer to 4 C in winter. Summer season starts from April and lasts till October. Winters starts in November and end in February.
There are a lot of transportation options available in New Delhi including Metro, Buses, Taxi and suburban railway. New Delhi is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural city. Indira Gandhi International Airport is located in the New Delhi and handles domestic and international flights.
Hinduism is the major religion of most of the population in New Delhi. The major communities include Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians and Jains.
New Delhi is a cosmopolitan city that represents many cultural and ethnic groups. The major religious festivals of New Delhi are Holi, Diwali, Lohri, Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha. International Mango Festival and Vasant Panchami are also held in New Delhi. Both festivals attract thousands of visitors every year from all over the world. Qutab Minar of Delhi is a famous destination for many tourists.
The New Delhi has a big English-Speaking workforce that attracts big multinational companies of the world.
There are a lot of monuments of significance and historical places in Delhi including Qutab Minar, Jama Masjid, Red Fort, India Gate, Raj Ghat and associated memorials, Bahá'í Lotus Temple, memorials of Mahatma Gandhi, Rashtrapati Bhavan and a lot of gardens of the Mughal Empire.
Cricket, football and hockey are the most popular sports of New Delhi. There are several playgrounds across the city. A lot of domestic and international sporting events and matches are held in Delhi.
