New Delhi is one of the fast growing metropolitan cities in India and also happens to be the national capital of this country. This place has a lot of historical significance and is regarded as the center of all major political activities. Almost all the major head offices of government organizations and the official residence of the Prime Minister and the President are located in this city. This modern city boasts of some of the best educational institutions and the fast growing IT sector which has changed the face of this city.
Old Delhi attractions
Delhi is divided into two parts- Old Delhi and the New Delhi. This part of the city is famous for its numerous historical attractions which comprises of forts, monuments, tombs and palaces. The Old Delhi area was built during the Mughal era of Shah Jahan and comprises of magnificent historical structures. The famous Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Qutb Minar, Moti Mahal, Firoz Shah Kotla and Tuglaqabad are some of the attractions of Old Delhi. Rajghat and Gandhi Memorial Museum are some of the must visit places in Old Delhi.
There are plenty of old streets, by lanes and quaint streets which comprise of bazaars (small street side shops) with a display of a wide array of goods from spices and condiments to second hand goods for sale. Places like Chandni Chowk, Chor Bazar and Chowri Bazar are some of the popular flea markets that sell different items which are popular with the tourists.
New Delhi attractions
Towards South Delhi, there are many significant places of tourist attractions which include the famous and modern Lotus Bahai temple which evokes interest with its huge and lovely 27 marble petals in the form of a lotus dome. The National Railway Museum in Chanakyapuri and the up market suburbs of Hauz Khas on Delhi-Mehrauli Road are also worth visiting.
There are plenty of attractions along New Delhi’s Connaught Place which is the heart of this city that has all kinds of activities with a bustling crowd, food joints and restaurants with parks and shopping centers. One of the prime landmarks of New Delhi is the India Gate, which is a war memorial built in the memory of the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during the first world war.
Tourists can enjoy the two-mile beautiful stretch of walkway along the Rajpath which leads to the Rashtrapati Bhavan (the official residence of the President of India). The two Secretariat buildings can also be seen alongside which are identical in nature. The National Gallery of Modern Art, the Crafts Museum, Jantar Mantar observatory, Nehru Memorial Museum and library are other places to visit.
Other sightseeing attractions of New Delhi
One can enjoy a visit to the sprawling lawns of the Lodi Gardens which are located towards the South of Connaught Place. Besides Safdarjung’s tomb, Humayun’s tomb and National Philatelic Museum are also other recommended places. The best-known Hindu temple in New Delhi is Lakshmi Narayan Temple which attracts plenty of visitors.
Shopping and recreation
Dilli Haat is one of the most famous shopping centers for those interested in buying rare handicrafts with exhibits of local arts and cultural artifacts. Central Cottage Industries Emporium, Kashmir Emporium and Khan Market along with Sunder Nagar market sells some authentic goods to buy. Hauz Khas is the best place to shop for designer labels and has a large number of boutiques catering to the up market clientele.
