Port-au-prince Travel Guide, Haiti

Port-au-Prince is the capital city of Haiti and of the Quest Department, as well as located around the center of the country on the Gonâve Gulf, supporting a population of nearly 1 million people.  It is the main commercial and seaport center of the country, and construction and tourism are important to the economy of the city as well. 

 Port-au-Prince is also the home of the National Library, the Art Center, the National Museum, the University of Haiti, a polytechnic college, and a technical institute.  Other interesting places in Port-au-Prince include the Basilica of Notre Dame, the stone quay that was built by the French, and the National Palace.

The Iron Market is one of the most popular places to go to in Port-au-Prince and is also a busy spot.  This is where people can shop for nearly anything they want at a bargain price.  A lot of the activity in Port-au-Prince is centered around the Iron Market.  This market is full of various items, ranging from fruit to handcrafted goods.

The Museum of Haitian Art, the Defly Mansion, the Gingerbread houses, and the neoclassical cathedral are other great places that are worth visiting.  The Cathédrale  de la Ste Trinité and Cathédrale de Port-au-Prince are a couple of the cathedrals that cater to the most famous artists in the country.  The Musée d'Art Haïtien du College St Pierre is a place with an excellent art collection.  Another place that is worth a visit is Santa Maria.

Some of the best places to dine in the city are in the hillside neighborhood of Petionville.  This site also has exciting nightlife, as well as offers travelers a spot to breathe after experiencing all the city life's hustle and bustle.  Boutillier is another suburb that provides a tranquil setting and is located high in the mountains.

Haiti is a fascinating country that has friendly people, and there is a lot for travelers to see, do, and experience while they are traveling through Port-au-Prince, which is the best city to start exploring the country from.  Although the country's people are very poor, they are lively and vibrant, and Port-au-Prince is always bustling with life.
