Sightseeing in Port Au Prince

Despite political turmoil and economic instability, Part au Prince, located in Haiti, has been able to establish and maintain a successful business out of tourism.  There may not be many places to visit but the few that Port Au Prince has are spectacular and very well preserved. 

The original National Palace was stunning, yet it was demolished.  After realizing the mistake, it was actually rebuilt in 1918.  Port Au Prince happens to have many interesting building structures in addition to the National Palace.  For example, the Cathedrale de Port au Prince which is also commonly referred to as the Cathedrale de Notre Dame after that in France.  It is adorned with neo romantic architecture colored in white and baby pink.

The Hotel Oloffson is another architectural delight which was built in the 1800s.  It was originally a mansion built for the former Haitian Presidents but has now been converted into a museum.  The reason why many people go here is that it looks exactly like a yellow gingerbread house in which it is nicknamed. 

If you are interested in the history and artistic culture of Haiti and Port au Prince, you may want to check out one of the following museums: the Musee National and the Musee d’art Haitien du College Saint Pierre.  The earlier has various artifacts from the colonization and the slave trade that passed through Haiti while the latter museum has some of the best art that comes from Haiti on display.
