Addis Ababa Sights and Landmarks Guide, Ethiopia
In terms of places to visit, Addis Ababa is a city infiltrated by historical, modern and natural sights for the viewing pleasure of everyone. There are various museums cathedrals palaces and modern structures in the city that makes it a must-visit for everyone.
In fact, just a walk along its busy thoroughfares is already a feast for the eyes. To top it all, security of guests is one of the utmost priorities of the Ethiopian government making its capital one of the most tourist-friendly cities in the whole world.
Probably atop anybody’s list of places to visit in Addis Ababa is the Ethiopian National Museum located between Arat Kilo Avenue and the University. It is home to the only plaster replica of the archeological discovery of the hominid Lucy. Likewise, the Parliament building, constructed in Emperor Haile Selassie’s time, is still the seat of Parliament today. It has a famous clock tower that draws tourists to this place.
The Shengo Hall was constructed to house its new parliament hall. It was built in Finland and was assembled in Addis Ababa. Currently it is a venue for various meetings and conventions.
The second largest cathedral in Africa is the new Medhane Alem otherwise known as the Savior of the World Cathedral near the Bole International Airport. In the district of Merkato, two structures from two of the most prominent religions can be found: the great Anwar Mosque and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Family. That same district also houses the biggest market in the whole African continent.
The Menelik's Imperial Palace is still the seat of government and is one sight that has lasted for centuries. Likewise, a newer palace known as the National Palace or the Jubilee Palace is the still the residence of the Ethiopian President.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral is the place where many famous people are buried. It was once the biggest Ethiopian Orthodox Cathedral.
When in this city, the places to visit can become endless. Therefore, make sure to allocate an ample amount of time to visit these sites because no Addis Ababa visit is complete without it. Make sure to ask permission though when taking pictures of people as an act of courtesy.
