Addis Ababa Nightlife, Ethiopia

Nightlife in Addis Ababa is a mix of some dancing and good old time drinking. Most drinks are of western origin; however, should you be up for a challenge, you can try the local drinks. The national drink of Ethiopia is known as tej which is brewed form of honey. Another choice can be the tela which tastes just like beer.

For a good dining experience, there are many different choices in terms of restaurants and coffee houses. For the budget conscious, the cafes along Bole Road and Piassa area offer the best drinks at a relatively affordable price. They serve the popular juice spritz made different fruit pulp layers in a glass. The choices of fruit include a selection of avocado, mango, papaya, banana and guava among others.

Café Chocolate around Victory Road is probably the only café that employs former street girls and prostitutes who would like to a have a turnaround in their lives. On top of it, food and drinks here are also very affordable. Team Mimi, also in Bole road, serves traditional Ethiopian cuisine. Their mesir besiga or ground meat with lentils, is a must try for everyone.

For those seeking luxurious food Fisherman Restaurant on Mickey Leland Street is a part-Chinese part-Tibetan restaurant with a wide selection of Asian seafood. The Castellis in Piazza is a top Italian restaurant in the city since 1942.

For drinks, there are several places in Addis Ababa that serve various alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at night. One of which is the Champions, a lounge opposite the Lime tree building. The popular products here are Hookah and drinks that are modestly priced over a Turkish atmosphere. Sheraton Gaslight is a fancy nightclub resembling that of foreign clubs. It serves the best drinks and you can dance the night away in the place. Just be sure though not to wear jeans and sneaker when planning to go there. Memo is another nightclub with a spacious dance floor. There you must try the bozena shiro that can be savored outdoors. On top of the Novis building there is Bailamos, a place that has a surprisingly intriguing salsa scene on weekends.

The liberal and diplomatic nature of the city assures every visitor peace and order. Likewise, with the stringent peace and order measures, having a good time is equally easy as anywhere else in the modern world.
