   SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

San Salvador, El Salvador is beautiful city and is the capital of the country.  This old city is settled in a valley next to a volcano, Quezaltepec.  This backdrop adds such beauty to the region and is a great draw for tourists.

The city houses many great attractions and one of the most visited is the Metropolitan Cathedral.  This very old church sits on the same site as the old Temple of Santa Domingo and is the main church of the Roman Catholics in San Salvador.  It is also the burial place of Oscar Romero, a bishop with the Roman Catholic Church, who was assassinated in 1980.

The oldest theater in all of Central America is The National Theater of El Salvador, or Catedral Metropolitana de San Salvador.  Beautiful operas and plays are held every month and is a must see for the theatrical connoisseur. 

The Presidential Palace is also a common tourist spot.  This actually consists of three separate buildings, one of which contains the residence of the President of El Salvador.

 Shopping in San Salvador is almost a national pastime.  Street vendors can be found almost everywhere.  Some of items to look for in particular are sorpresas, which resemble an egg, but when taken apart have a small country scene inside. Hand painted woods, and ceramics are also in high demand. 

Wicker furniture is plentiful and you can find some great pieces for next to nothing.  There is also a great four story mall located in the center of the city with many high end shops and restaurants.  You can easily do your entire souvenir shopping in this one part of the city. San Salvador is a city rich in history and culture.  Take the time to see the sights and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
