Vinkovci Sights and Landmarks Guide, Croatia

Vinkovci Sights – Important Churches

Vinkovci is the largest town situated 12 miles from Osijek and 190miles from Dubrovnik in the Vukovar-Srijem County that is known as a fertile area with many green plains providing food for the whole Croatia. Vinkovci is situated on the banks of the Bosut River being also rich in cultural and historical heritage.

An attraction that is worth being seen is the pre-Romanesque church on Meraja, built in 1100 and housing the coats of arms of Koloman and Ladislas kings, thing that raises its cultural value and makes it a significant medieval monument. The old timber beams and the roof of the church were replaced with modern ones and a new brick roof altering its medieval appearance.

The parish church was built in 1777 in Baroque style but in the 20th century the local authorities decided it should obtain a modern appearance that negatively affected its value, at least some of the tourists think so.

Vinkovci Sights – The Centre of the Town

The buildings of The Music School, The Vinkovci Gymnasium or that of the Trade High School have nice architecture, the last two buildings surround a beautiful park that abounds in flowers, statues and fountains very well put into evidence by lights during the night.

The War of Independence of Croatia destroyed many touristic attractions in Vinkovci, among which we should mention the city library, which was completely burnt down, the law courts, the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, both hospitals, the theatre, the cinemas, many factories and buildings, most of them being rebuilt till the present day and looking more beautiful than ever.

During the Austro-Hungarian domination, the town was the military centre of the whole region which left some signs in the design and architecture of the buildings and the houses existing in the centre of the town. They all kept the charm and beauty of what we call today the baroque style.

The slowly flowing river Bosut offers pleasant walks along its banks while those interested in nature and walking, also have the chance to do it in the beautiful parks with alleys full of flowers, statues of important people placed here and there, fountains nicely decorated in the same Baroque style that charm and relax your eyes.

Every old house and building in the centre of the town can be considered a valuable monument; the centre itself is a touristic attraction due to the Roman walls of the old town called then “Colonia Aurelia Cibalae”.

Vinkovci is also famous for the Town Museum, the Gallery, the Town Library and the town park with the monument of “The Holy Trinity” and the central square situated in the centre of the town.

Vinkovci Sights makes reference to the city’s big squares, long and prominent streets, parks and green areas, six, 2 or 3 starred hotels, 15 restaurants and many cafes and summer terraces placed along the town promenade that has been completely renovated to the delight of the tourists.

Among the most important things that should be admired in Vinkovci one should mention the traditional costumes that are to be seen every year at the “Vinkovci Autumn” festival.

When talking about Vinkovci Sights one should keep in mind the idea that Vinkovci is a town where everybody would gladly come again for it is an old town full of beauty and tradition.
