Slavonski Brod Sights – The Fortress

Being an important city in Croatia located 47 miles from Osijek and 140 miles from Split, Slavonski Brod is home for the most interesting and attractive places that can be found and visited by tourists, and it mainly refers to the unique fortress that was built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its role was to defend the city against the Turks’ invasion and it is placed nowadays on the list of the best preserved fortresses in Europe which only raises its value.

It is a baroque fortress constructed in the 18th century near the Sava River, having an incredible architecture especially that of the church yard and of the altar. The paintings existing in the monastery should not be neglected when referring to the beauties of the fortress. Since 1720 there is also a faculty of philosophy inside.

Slavonski Brod Sights should definitely take into consideration the existence of one of the three most popular and biggest squares in Croatia. It refers to Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić Square that was built during the late 19th century and the beginning of 21st century and it is indeed a beautiful square located right in the middle of the town and having a wonderful view of the Sava River.

Nowadays a lot of cultural events and fairs take place every week in Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić Square that got its name after the famous children’s writer who even has the house there. Besides public events, the square seems to be the perfect location for galleries, cafes, nights clubs, all kind of shops, in a word it is a square for everybody, old or young ones, willing to walk on the promenade called “Kej” next to the river and be romantic or enjoy themselves in the pubs and clubs opened till late at night.

Slavonski Brod Sights – The “Tamburitza” Museum

Slavonski Brod has many important monuments like those dedicated to bishop Josip Stadler and Franjo Tudman who was the first president of Croatia.

There is an important gallery in the town called “the Ruzic Gallery” which presents historical scenes of the Tvrdava fortress. Besides all these and a traditional blacksmith’s workshop, there is the famous “Tamburitza Museum” situated inside the Tvrdava Fortress. It is the only museum in Croatia dedicated to the musical symbol of Slavonia region that is tamburitza.

The museum exhibits the history of tamburitza dating one hundred years ago and it shows the way this instrument developed during its long history. Hand written notes referring to the instrument since 1912 and the instrument itself dating from 1920 and many other precious classical exhibits and photographs are all displayed in the museum to the delight and interest of the numerous tourists who visit it.

Maybe the most interesting attraction of this museum is the way this instrument is made, a long tradition that is lively presented to visitors in very well organized workshops where tourists are invited to participate and even learn some of the secrets of the laborious process of tamburitza making.
