San Jose Nightlife, Costa Rica

In San Jose, Costa Rica, there is an active nightlife. No matter what you like to do, San Jose has something for you.

If you prefer to have a relaxed night out on the town, there are various bars that are low key and have a tranquil, “pura vida” lifestyle while other bars are wilder with loud music and dancing. There are place to go to listen to live music, theatres and much more.

If you are interested in a quiet night, try one of these bars: Roots, which is a reggae bar, Cafe Expresivo which is a poetry bar, Cafe Mundo and Bakea. Besides drinks, there are great small platters too.

For a livelier night, you can go to one of San Jose’s discotecs or night clubs. Some of the best in the city include the following: Karaoke 88, Castro’s, El Tobogan, Ebony 56 and Planet Mall. Castro’s and El Tobogan are marvelous for salsa dancing.

The best place to go to for live music is the Jazz Cafe. There is live music seven days a week and it is a variety of music including troba, jazz, funk, soul, alternative music, salsa, reggae and much more. Some bands and singers that you may see playing there frequently are Malpais, Neotics, Sasha Cambell, Cantoamerica, Las Tortugas, Son de Tizika and many more of Costa Rica’s favorites. There is an average entrance fee of $5 to see these performances.

There are two popular theatres in San Jose that have frequent night performances and some matinees. These two theatres are the National Theatre (Teatro Nacional) and the Teatro Popular Melico Salazar. There are plays, operas, dances and music that are performed in these Costa Rican theaters. Tickets are normally cheap ranging anywhere from $2 to $40. San Jose also has a variety of Casinos all throughout the city. You should be careful since some of these casinos are in rougher places and may make you an easy target to be assaulted. Therefore you should go the casinos which are located in the hotels (preferably those that you are staying at) and at the ones in secluded areas. Some of the safest casinos in San Jose include the following casinos: Casino Colonial, Jungle Casino, Clarion Amon Plaza’s Casino, Gran Hotel Costa Rica’s Casino, Best Western’s Hotel and the Aurola Holiday Inn’s Casino.

San Jose is full of nightly entertainment. Whether you want to dance, gamble, listen to great music or just relax with some friends, San Jose’s nightlife has something for you!
