Medellín is located in North of Colombia and with the population touching almost two and a half million, Medellín easily bags the second spot for most populated cities when compared to all cities of Colombia. The metropolitan area of Medellín comes on 95th position when it comes to most populated metropolitan areas on this planet. This metropolitan area is the second largest amongst all in the country of Colombia.
The first Industrial Revolution was taken in this city of Medellín and this was the time when the economical growth of this city never looked back. Transport facilities like that of railways helped the businessmen move from one city to the other with ease. Multiple educational institutions were opened which helped the city of Medellín to produce an educated class of locals which will help Medellín in terms of economical growth. Textile business was also on the rise during this industrial revolution.
The famous drug smuggler Pablo Escobar used to run his business from this city itself. Medellín used to be the hub for all the criminal activities and also for all the plans which were made to transfer drug from one place to the other. In the year 1989 Forbes Magazine gave him the tag of 7th richest personalities on this planet and all this was just due to his drug smuggling. He was killed somewhere in December 1993 by the local police before the United States of America could take him to their country for execution of multiple trials which were due on him.
Pablo Escobar was responsible for launching a war in the city against the local government as he never wanted the Colombian government to hand him over to the US officials. This war destroyed the roots of Medellín and this city became famous for its criminal activities and violent nature due to this war.
Today Medellín is one of the fastest growing cities in Colombia and the stats say that Medellín is the major city which drives the economy of Colombia.
Medellín is home to some famous companies like those of Grupo Empresarial Antioqueño, Suramericana de Seguros, Compañía Nacional de Chocolates, and Cementos Argos etc. More than 80000 locals work in these groups of companies and it is said that their net profit is over 17 billion dollars.
