Winnipeg Travel Guide, Manitoba

At 572km E of Regina you will find Manitoba's capital, a city of 680,000 inhabitants that can pride themselves for having a rich cultural scene that has includes a famous orchestra that triumphed in New York and a theater-and-arts complex.

Winnipeg is an excellent destination if you want free entertainment. Festival Park Stage is the site of summer concerts. Kildonan Park is the venue for Rainbow Stages musicals which are performed here in July and August. The outdoor Lyric Theatre is the venue where you can watch The Royal Winnipeg Ballet performing and listen to some live music performed by the Winnipeg Symphony or local jazz bands. The theatre offers great entertainment for kids too as it hosts the hosts the Winnie the Pooh Festival.

Besides being a cultural hub, the city is also known to have been a distribution-and-supply center its location at the confluence of Red and Assiniboine rivers playing an important role in its development. In summer the two rivers offer excellent opportunities to stroll on the banks or have a picnic, but the going on a cruise is also among the favorite activity. There is a variety of cruises you can choose from including sightseeing and dinner-dance cruises. The most popular cruise ships are MS River Rouge and MS Paddlewheel Queen and you can get on board from the Provencher Bridge. In winter the two rivers make an excellent place for skating.

Besides the riverfront and there are other spots for recreational activities like the Assiniboine Park which is also an excellent spot for skating. The park features picnicking areas, biking trails, a duck pond, a miniature railway, an English garden, the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, a zoological park and a conservatory. Another park is Kildonan Park which is just as perfect for an outing offering plenty of outdoor activities including outdoor swimming and nice views from the restaurants.

Kildonan Park is a great place for children, too as they can see the Witch's House from Hansel and Gretel in the park. Assiniboine Park also welcomes kids offering them a wonderful playing ground, a zoo where they can see the animals in a space close to their natural environment. There is a great variety of animals and they will love watching them and play in the special Discovery Centre.

And they have plenty of other places to have fun. Among them the Manitoba Children's Museum featuring themed galleries where they can have fun creating their own television shows. The museum is opened only till 4:30pm Sunday to Thursday but on Friday and Saturday kids can stay till 8 p.m. Kids can also be kept entertained if you take them to the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, in the CanWest Global Performing Arts Centre at Forks Market. These places are educational and fun.

If you come to Winnipeg you can’t miss having a ride on the 1900 steam-era train, the Prairie Dog Central. It introduces the visitor to the prairie on a 2 1/2-hour round-trip.

The city’s market is also among the attractions offering both entertainment and fresh and cheap food. Shopping for gifts in the nearby shops is a good idea.

History buffs can visit the Exchange District, a national historic site very popular as a set for movies for its unparalleled examples of terra-cotta and cut-stone architecture. The district is also famous for housing the city’s best art galleries.

Winnipeg mixes history and culture with a picturesque landscape to deliver a vacation destination like no other. Singles and couples will love the adventure and the romantic escapes offered by the city and surrounding area, and families will love the variety of activities.
