Winnipeg Sights and Landmarks Guide, Manitoba
As a major city in the American continent, Winnipeg is also frequently visited. There are a lot of sights and attractions here that any tourist can surely enjoy. No holiday in the city would be complete without dropping by these attractions. So what sights and places can Winnipeg offer the curious tourist?
Manitoba Museum
The Manitoba Museum houses many archaeological finds, most of them in the Winnipeg area. These finds include the horseshoe crab fossils that have been found in Churchill and in the Grand Rapids Uplands. Other fossils in display also include dinosaur bones. The Manitoba Museum also has an exhibit of the largest fossil ever found of a trilobite, as well as a show featuring the aboriginal inhabitants of Manitoba entitled “Manitoba First Farmers.”
Not only limited to archaeology, the museum houses an exhibit called Space Rocks. This exhibit offers visitors the opportunity to touch a real meteorite and view it up close and personal. Furthering its astronomy-related programs, the Manitoba Museum also has astronomers that offer telescope-choosing services. The museum also sells telescopes and has a planetarium.
Forks National Historic Site of Canada
If you want to get a feel for pre-European Canada, then the Forks National Historic Site Park is the place for you to go. Sitting at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, the general area of Forks National Historic Site served as a “meeting place” for the pre-European settlers of the Canadian West. It is here that fur traders got together to showcase their wares and conduct business. Later on, several important forts were erected at the site.
Known not only for its history, the site is frequented by tourists and Canadians for its peaceful landscape. The site also hosts festivals and other special events at certain times of the year.
Winnipeg Art Gallery
All of us have an appreciation for art. That is why a holiday to Winnipeg or in any other place would not be complete without viewing the local art gallery. In this case, you should visit the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
The gallery is renowned not only for its display of Inuit works of art, but also for contemporary Manitoban and Canadian artists. Current exhibits include Five Decades of Bruce Head, an exhibit showcasing the innovative works of Bruce Head. These works encompass fifty years of artistry from Mr. Head. The exhibit is only up to November 23, 2008. There is also Installation Transformation: Objects Into Art. This exhibit shows the work of female artists using materials procured from whatever was available at the moment of creating.
