Dacca Travel Guide, Bangladesh
Dacca, Bangladesh is known now as Dhaka. It is the country’s capital and is one of the major cities found in South Asia. It is situated on the banks of the Buriganga River, and if you count the entire metropolitan area, there are over twelve million people. It is also the largest city in Bangladesh.
Dacca is often known as the City of Mosques, and this city is the heart of commercialism in the country. The city has a great number of migrant workers, and most are employed in households and the textile industry.
There are many large corporations with home offices or main branches within the city. Bangladesh Bank, Citibank, and HSBC all have large offices here. The city is undergoing a great wave of construction and the skyscrapers and other high rise buildings are changing the city landscape. Tourism and its related areas are booming as well.
Dacca is famous for the great Muslin cloth, which has an ethnic value. This city is Islamic, therefore you will find few places to drink alcohol. But Dacca has a great cultural and historical life. There are many celebrations in this city, such as Victory Day, Independence Day, and Language Martyr’s Day. These days are public holidays and many groups organize concerts festival promotions.
Rickshaws are some of the most common sights in Dacca. These beautifully painted bicycle taxis employ over three million drivers! However, due to some traffic problems created by these rickshaws, several areas of the city have banned them to allow access to other vehicles.
One of the most beautiful buildings in Dacca is the Jativa Sangsad Bhaban or the National Parliament House. This building was designed by Louis Kahn, an American architect and is often referred to as Dacca’s world wonder. It has a beautiful garden area and you will a usually see a great number of tourist starting in awe at this wonderful building.
