Perth Travel Guide, Australia

Perth, which has a current population of 1.1 million, is the fourth largest of Australia’s cities, and the metropolitan capital of Western Australia. It is said to be one of the world’s isolated capitals but nevertheless, one of the most vibrant and modern cities for commerce and industry. It is located between the vast blue waters of the Indian Ocean and the steep ridges of the Darling Range.

Perth’s central business district is bordered by the Swan River from the south and east, the Kings Park on the west and a series of railway lines on the north. The St. Georges Terrace is a street prominent for its abundant line of office spaces. One can also catch a glimpse of the Central Park, the city’s tallest building and the sixth among Australia’s tallest edifices.

On the more relaxing view, Perth has its abounding share of clear coastal beaches. Coupled with its reputation of being Australia’s sunniest state, Perth is a perfect place for any outdoor or beach holiday. That is also, why life in Perth is described as laid back and easy.

Economy

Perth is known for its mining industry. A large percentage of the world’s chief mining companies are based in Perth like BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto. Large deposits of minerals including iron ore, nickel and natural gas have made mining a major industry in Perth since the 1960’s.

Perth’s economic progression is also due to the availability of high-skilled work force, lively retail industry and modern infrastructure and transportation lines.

The tourism industry also contributes much to Perth’s economy. The hotel and retail services continue to thrive as tourists flock Perth, especially its beautiful beaches.

Transportation

Perth has excellent lines of transportation by air, water, road or railways.  The Perth Airport serves as the city’s main air terminal for domestic and international flights, and is located in Guildford. It is Australia’s fourth busiest airport because of its strategic location servicing local, Asian and Pacific locations as well.

Perth’s main ferry station is located at Barrack Street Jetty. Ferries trips to Fremantle, Rottnest and South Perth are available daily. Other ferry terminals are located in East and North Fremantle and Hillarys Boat Harbour. Ferry operators also offer whale watching cruises to its clients.

A Free Transit Zone or FTZ is available for commuters in Perth City. They can access free travel on buses and trains seven days a week from Kings Park to the Causeway, and the Northbridge all the way to the Swan River.  The Perth Central Train Station in Wellington serves as the main railway station in Perth. All suburban trains pass and leave through this station at regular intervals.

Sports

Popular sports in Perth are Cricket and Australian Football. Perth’s warm and sunny climate makes it ideal for outdoor sports which also make it a favorite venue for international sports events like the FINA World Championships and World Lacrosse Games.

Perth also has rivers with vast ski zones where many famous surface water sports enthusiasts enjoy the waters.

There are also motorsports facilities in Perth which includes the Perth Motorplex, a drag racing and speedway circuit and the Barbagallo Raceway, for circuit racing and drifting.

Education
