Parks and Gardens
Adelaide is known for its abundant garden parks. Each displays a unique character and offers places of solitude and relaxation for its visitors.
The Elder Park is a popular park venue where guests can rent paddleboats and go for bicycle rides. The view of the Memorial Tennis Complex and Adelaide Complex can be seen across the river.
Tourists can enjoy a rowboat ride on the lake or lay back on shady trees and view of rose gardens in Rymill Park. Barbecue facilities, playgrounds and coffee kiosks are also available in the area.
The Botanic Park, located between the city’s Botanic Garden and Adelaide Zoo, is one of the well-loved parks. It is the venue for the yearly WOMADELAIDE music festival.
The very poignant Peace Park displays the Cross of Sacrifice, Prince Henry Gardens and Pioneer Women’s Memorial Gardens.
The Japanese themed Adelaide-Himeji Garden serves as a solitary place of calmness, with its lake and mountain garden and dry garden. This park celebrates Adelaide’s sister-city relationship with Himeji, Japan.
The Veale Garden showcases more than fifty varieties of rose plants in its gardens, grassy knolls, a small waterfall and rows of lush trees and shrubs.
Victoria Park features the Victoria Park Racecourse, bicycle paths, alleyways and an olive grove site. The park is also home to various local bird species.
The winding Bonython Park offers a bike path, nature trail and picnic facilities and the yearly Schutzenfest event is held here.
The Wirranendi offers a relaxing city view with its young forest trees, bush trails and eye-catching native grass landscapes and wetland.
The Belair National Park has many trails for bushwalking and nature-tripping. Tennis courts, playgrounds for children and picnic areas are accessible for everyone. The historic Old Government House is also situated in this park.
Cultural and Art Museums
Adelaide has a rich cultural history that is shown through its memorials, churches and museums.
Tourists can learn about Adelaide’s early settlers at the Aboriginal Cultures Gallery in South Australian Museum on the North Terrace. It houses a huge collection of Aboriginal antiquities and artifacts. The Tandaya or National Aboriginal Cultural Institute is also situated in Adelaide.
Guests can discover much of Adelaide’s European heritage at the South Australian Museum. The State Library contains the Bradman Collection, in honor of the famous cricket legend.
The Migration Museum tells a unique historic tale about the large flock migrants and refugees who came to Australia.
The Adelaide Town Hall also reflects the city’s legacies and traditions and includes a display room as a tribute to Queen Adelaide, after whom the city was named.
Port Adelaide is the city’s first declared heritage area and features South Australia’s finest historical structures.
Food and Wine
Adelaide is South Australia’s wine capital and guests can find winery tours very delightful.
The National Wine Centre showcases the country’s wine industry and features a wine-tasting gallery, an exhibit about winemaking and a working vineyard.
Penfolds Magill Estate in the Adelaide foothills also offers fantastic wine tasting and winery tours.
A visit to Haigh’s Chocolates is not to be missed when you tour around Adelaide. The company is the only chocolate maker that imports and roasts their own chocolate beans.
