Mission, TX US – Overview: A Rapidly Growing City

Mission-The Citrus City
Owing to the fact that the city of Mission thrives on its citrus industry, which has over the years developed into a multi-million dollar business, this city is often referred to as the Citrus City. Mission is also recognized as a leading distributor of the ruby red grapefruit. Acknowledging the importance of its citrus cultivation, the city of Mission celebrates the lively and colorful Citrus Fiesta on an annual basis.
Looking back into the past
Initially occupied by tribes of the Native American Coahuiltecans that survived on natural resources for a period of 1,000 years, the area where it lies now was earlier called La Lomita. It was in the year 1908 that Mission was founded as a town along with the establishment of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. It has since then rapidly grown into a city that has a population close to 50,000.
Economy
The city of Mission has experienced tremendous economic growth with a majority of its resources concentrated on the processing and canning of citrus fruits and vegetables grown in the lower Rio Grande Valley regions.
While it is home to a number of oil wells, it also has an industry focused on the manufacture of both concrete as well as consumer goods.
Nature & Wildlife
The city of Mission has retained its natural beauty while continuing to grow on the economic front. Dotted by trees around its premises, the city is a premiere birding spot, attracting enthusiasts at its birding headquarters during the prime seasons.
It is right to conclude that Mission has not only lured tourists around the world with its modernized shops and streets but also with the popular butterfly festival and continues to do so with many other natural treats that tourists seek.
The city of Mission has shown rapid growth and retained its culture in time without adversely affecting the economic development. While it has given due respect to its unique past, it also recognizes the importance and impact of history on present day cultures.
