Lying in the middle of the lower peninsula of the US state of Michigan, the busy city of Midland is one of the 83 counties in Michigan. It is located 20 miles NW of Saginaw Bay and is part of the Tri-Cities of Midland, Saginaw and Bay City. The small part of the city lies in the Bay County.

Midland is a sister city to Handa in Aichi, Japan. Their sister relationship began when Dow Company opened a manufacturing plant in Handa, Japan. The former mayor of Handa, Hiroshi Takeuchi, accepted the idea of having Dow in their city, where their relationship was established. Up to now, their strong sister-city relationship is still alive, being maintained by Takeuchi’s successors in the office. Just recently, the two have already celebrated their 25th strong years of friendship.
