The city of Hancock is situated in Houghton County which is part of Michigan, United States. On a larger scale, the city of Hancock is situated on the Keweenaw Peninsula which is also famous by the name of Copper Island amongst the locals. The city of Hancock was named in the memory of John Hancock who was a famous merchant and a patriot of the famous American Revolution.

The climate is continental with considerable humidity. Although this continental climate makes life for foreign tourists considerably harsh, the city is also famous for its long winters. It is this winter season which brings in the snow and this is what many tourists love in this city. It is this snowy season and the arctic winds that totally make up the lake effect and this is another reason why many tourists  come to this city.

As per the census of 2000, the population was of 4400 inhabitants that used to live in around 1800 houses and around 96 percent of the total population in this city of Hancock are white, around 0.8 percent are black, around 0.9 percent are Native Americans, around 1 percent are Asians. The city of Hancock stretches over an area of around 7.5 square kilometers. Around 6.5 square kilometers of the city is land while the rest 1 square kilometer is water.

Along with English, another language, which is famous in the city of Hancock, is Finnish. The reason behind this is the presence of many numbers of Finns in this city of Hancock which have actually migrated to this city in the last few decades. That is why from  2007 most of the public sings in the city of Hancock were printed in both Finnish and English. It is due to the presence of so many Finns in this city of Hancock that the media and the locals many times tagged the city as the focal point of Finns in the United States.
