Salina History, Kansas

Initially this land, where the city of Salina is located, was used as a resting place for various travelers and businessmen as well as a trading post for businessmen. It proved to be an important piece of land for travelers and hence very soon various people started to settle down thus forming the city of Salina. All this started in the year 1860 and since then the city hasn’t looked back.

Salina Moves towards Modernization

In 1867, this city was gifted with its own railroad lines thus connecting the city to many major neighboring regions around it. It was due to the efforts of Philips, a colonel who had fought during the civil war, that this city got its own railroad.

By 1872, the city was shipping meat in sealed refrigerated cars using these railroad lines. This was its first step towards economical growth. Soon a floor mill powered by steam was started in Salina due to the abundant growth of wheat in this city during those days.

World War II and Salina

During the Second World War this city was heavily used by the American Army for various purposes and this did give this city the required national recognition

During those days war, this city was home to 22nd Strategic Aerospace Division, 550th Strategic Missile Squadron, 310th Strategic Aerospace Wing, the KC – 97 Stratotankers, B- 47 Stratojets, and the 310th Bomb Wings all of which were counted under the Strategic Air Command of the United States Army.

Salina Becomes Home To an International Record

It was February 2005, when Steve Fossett made the record of flying non – refueled, non – stop, solo aerial circumnavigation around the planet using an airplane. He flew continuously for more than 67 hours thus giving the city the required international recognition.
