The city of Hilo happens to be a coastal town situated in the State of Hawaii. The city of Hilo is also the county seat for the Hawaii County and happens to be the situated in the Southern Hilo District. The famous Holi Bay is also located in the proximity of this city. The city of Hilo has two volcanoes in its proximity namely Mauna Kea (which is considered to be active) and Mauna Loa (which is a dormant volcano). This huge population makes the city of Hilo as the largest in the Island of Hawaii and the second largest city in the state of Hawaii. The city of Hilo stretches over an area of around 151 kilometer square of which around 141 kilometer square is land and rest (which is around 7 percent of the total) is water.
The location of Hilo in the Island of Hawaii is such that it faces the trade winds. It is actually located windward with respect to the trade winds of the nearby sea and it is this location, which makes the city of Hilo the wettest city when compared to all other cities in United States of America. The city of Hilo is also one of the wettest cities on the planet. The statistics of around 6 decades show that the city of Hilo receives an average of around 130 inches of rainfall which is actually huge when compared to the normal rainfall which many other cities in United States receive. Many regions in and around Hilo might also receive around 200 inches of rainfall on some rare occasions.
Also due to the location of the city, this city has also been considered as seriously vulnerable to the severe tsunamis.
