In the past, the area of Steamboat Sprigs was inhabited by the Yampatikas Utes. Trappers and Ranchers started to move into this area in the 19th century.
In 1879, the native Utes were forcibly moved by the US Army. In the Rocky Mountain winters, skiing is the only possibility of transportation.
