Palm Springs Travel Guide, California
Welcome to a place of sun shine, a place of the palms and entertainment. Palm Springs prides itself with good weather most of the year and this is mainly due to the presence of the high San Jacinto Mountains that stop the rain from ruining the tourists’ vacation. Summers tend to be kind of hot though and people look for the cool places near the mountain.
The mountain offers great training for climbers being one of the steepest in North America. It also offers great views even for those who are not climbers. All you have to do is get on the aerial tram and it will take you 8,000 feet high up in the Chino Canyon in just 10 minutes. The ride is quite impressive and you will have to be prepared to cool down as much as 4 degrees. If you make the ride in summer it is quite refreshing and you can hike and camp. In winter it is great for cross county skiing. The departure point is at 2,643 feet at Valley Station.
That the place is a true treasure of natural wonders proves the visit to The Moorten Botanical Gardens where you can see 3,000 examples of desert cacti and plants from around the region and beyond. The Palm Springs Art Museum formerly known as the Palm Springs Desert Museum is also worth visiting for its traveling exhibitions and permanent collection, it features 19th, 20th, and 21st century works and it has a theatre, a number of galleries. You might even be there when one of the many special events is on.
Another line of galleries can be found at Palm Canyon Drive that is also dotted with shops and restaurants, being home to Palm Springs Walk of Stars. This street is one of the most popular in the city and it is a pleasure just to walk up and down the street.
Even if in the past the town had a somewhat “dirty“ image now there’s been a clean up of all the trivial and the bad taste and exhibiting a small town feel with a mix of European touch.
The main activities once you’re here are playing golf and tennis, swimming and sunbathing of which golf is the king. There are plenty of other activities like balloon riding. It is a great way of having a bird’s eye view of the area and enjoy great views of the landscape of the area.
Being a place for relaxation, a place where people come to spend their vacation, Palm Springs is a top destination among Americans and not only.
Besides fun, sunshine and outdoor activities there are plenty of other things you can do in town, for example you can learn about the life and customs of the Indians that were the first settlers of the place and are still very present in the town’s life, actually they own half the territory on which the town lays. So you will get culturally enriched and know a lot more about al aspects of life in Palm Springs and in this part of the county.
History Buffs will be delighted by the Village Green Heritage Center located in the centre of the city. You can see here the Cornelia White House, Rudy’s 1930's General Store Museum, Palm Springs Air Museum and Agua Caliente Cultural Museum.
The top accommodation facilities can be found just few steps away from the city centre on Bellardo and Cahuilla Avenues. The inns, hotels and B&Bs are of historic value as famous people like Frank Sinatra were hosted here. The historic inns are very classy and maintain the charm of the past. Coming here you will feel like royalty living a few decades back. Each time you come you can choose to stay in a different one as they are all special in design and service. To see them all you have to be here for the annual Inn Walk the first Thursday following Thanksgiving and you will be able to enter all the inns and then decide where to stay.
Palm Springs is a really unique city set against a backdrop of beautiful landscape, with a rich historical heritage and old charm with a touch of new glamour.
