Kingston Upon Hull Travel Guide, United Kingdom
Kingston upon Hull, UK - Overview
Kingston upon Hull is popularly referred to as only Hull and is located in the English East Riding quarter of Yorkshire. It is separated from the North Sea by a distance of 40 km or 25 miles and sits on the River Hull at its confluence with the estuary of Humber.
In 1299 king Edward I accorded the name Kings Town upon Hull which colloquially became Kingston upon Hull or simply Hull. Hull has mostly served as an industrial metropolis (like so many other English cities and towns whose growth and development had been fostered by trade), whaling and fishing centre, trading and commercial centre, port of military supply and a busy market town in its long trajectory.
Kingston upon Hull has a war ravaged past like Coventry, being the site of some carnages and bloodbaths. It was a battleground for the English civil wars, was severely bombed and devastated during World War II and also formed the backdrop to some serious action that resulted in the slave trade abolition in Britain.
The period succeeding the damage during World War II witnessed an industrial slump and decadence, but with programs of revival and post war reconstruction, Hull has once more stood back on its feet.
The city has a rich cultural and sporting legacy, being home to an EPL football club and formed the setting of many of Philip Larkin’s poems.
Kingston upon Hull will spoil you for choice with its myriad sights and attractions that it has to offer to its visitors. Among the more notable tourist destinations are Hull City Hall, The Wilberforce Monument, Pearson Park, The Venn Building Inside University Of Hull, Hull Trinity House School, Wilberforce College, Wyke College, Hull College, Hymers College, University Of Lincoln, Hull York Medical School, The Guildhall, Yorkshire Wolds, The Queens Garden And Maritime Museum and others.
