Aleppo Travel Guide, Syria
A Province in the country of Syria is expressed by the name of governorate and there are around 14 governorates in Syria. Aleppo is one of those governorates in Northern Syria and the city of Aleppo is the capital city for this governorate. Aleppo governorate happens to be the largest governorates in Syria with a population of around 4400000 inhabitants spreading over an area of around 16000 square kilometers.
Around 70 percent of the total population in the city of Aleppo is Sunni Muslims. Most of these Sunni Muslims are descendents from various Arab countries. Small numbers of migrants from other smaller countries also contribute to this Sunni Muslim population. Some of the smaller ethnicities are Chechens, Bulgars, Bosnians, Albanians, Adyghe, Turks, and Kabardins etc. Along with the Sunni Muslims, around 20 percent of the total population is member of the Orthodox congregations thus contributing to the Christian population. The city also used to have a strong Jewish population but it slowly died out.
Arabic language has faced many changes in whichever country it was adopted and the country of Syria also has its own version of Arabic Language. This version is called the Syrian Arabic. Within the country of Syria itself, you will find many other forms of Arabic language being used like North Mesopotamian Arabic and the Iraqi Arabic. Similarly, in the Northern Region of Syria the North Syrian Arabic is used as the prime language. Hence, for the city of Aleppo the major language in use is the Syrian Arabic itself.
Although stealing is not frequent in the city of Aleppo, we would still suggest you take care of your stuff while in the major parts of the city. Also, note that Friday is considered to be the holy day of the week and hence most of the markets and historical monuments are closed for public viewing so you must plan your tour for this city accordingly.
The inhabitants of Aleppo City love their culture very much and they will love to welcome you to their city if you respect their culture. Dress codes have always been an important rule in Islamic religion and this applies on the city of Aleppo too. While in Aleppo, males must wear regular shirts with long pants while females must avoid clothes that are too revealing. Dress up the way the people of Aleppo do and you will be amazed by the hospitality they will show you.
