Oviedo Sights – Religious Sites
As a city in the country of Spain, Oviedo has a lot of religious sites that do not only serve as a house for worship but also became popular landmarks already. Oviedo Sights will not be complete without these basilicas and cathedrals that showing a part of the city’s history and culture.
Basilica del Salvador. This 13th century Gothic Cathedral is located at the northern part of the city. It has three doorways with styles different from each other. The center doorway depicts the Transfiguration in Baroque Architecture. It has one of the finest towers in Spain which stands at 269 ft. Being at the top of the tower gives the onlooker a panoramic view of Oviedo.
Casa de la Rua. This is the city’s oldest secular structure. It was created in the 15th century. Casa de la Rua has a very attractive architecture.
Santa Maria la Real. This church was established in 1592. It has a Renaissance style of architecture. The Christian site also serves as a burial site of important people in the city.
Oviedo Sights – Museums
In every city, the museums are always present. These places have become one of the most visited and most interesting Oviedo Sights.
Archeological Museum. This is one of the many archeological museums in the country. It is found in the cloister of the Convento de San Vicente. It has a collection of Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque artworks. Most of the pieces came from Asturias. The displays include sculpture, mosaics, coins and other artifacts from Iberia during the Roman rule. The second level has exhibits of pieces during the Stone Age which came from neighboring places.
Provincial Museum of Arts. This museum is located in the Baroque Palacio de Velarde. The exhibits are pieces from the Renaissance and Baroque Eras. It also displays the contemporary paintings of Asturian artists.
Oviedo Sights – Parks and Plazas
Parks and Plazas are one of the most interesting places to visit. They illustrate the natural beauty of the city and the fine craftsmanship of the people.
Parque de San Francisco. This park is one of the most famous landmarks in Oviedo. It area covers 6 hectares of land area. It has government buildings and the site also houses a theatrical hall. It is good to walk around the place while marveling at the different architectures.
Plaza Daoiz y Velarde. A lot of residents and tourists hang around in this area. The plaza is surrounded by houses with Baroque and Rococo architecture.
Plaza Porlier. This is just a small plaza. It is the location of the Palacio de Toreno which was built in the 17th century. It also holds the Palacio Camposagrado which was created in the 18th century.
