Johannesburg Sights and Landmarks Guide, South Africa
Johannesburg was not a well-known destination for traditional tourism, but made a big impression in being a useful gateway for serving flights to Durban, Cape Town, and Kruger National Park. Most international flights to South Africa will pass through Johannesburg at least once. With this accessible transit, the city has attracted more tourists to visit. If you fly to Johannesburg, don’t forget to include in your list of destinations the following spots in the city.
History and Art Museums are foremost to visit. Check out the Nelson Mandela National Museum. It is formerly located in the home of the legendary Nelson Mandela, in Soweto and it is one of the largest tourist destination in the city. Nelson Mandela’s and some of his family’s personal artifacts still fill this historical place.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site is another tourist spot that bears informative facts and stories about Johannesburg. It can be found twenty-five kilometers northwest of Johannesburg. This site is said to hold the history of the cradle of humankind. Sterkfontein Fossil Gallery is the place where you will find the models of Australopithecus africanus (first adult fossil of man) and Australopithecine (first skeleton of man that is nearly complete in structure). It was popularly known and visited by many tourists because of its world-renowned site for hominid fossils.
Apartheid Museum, an extraordinary museum, has become the leading tourist destination of the city, which both foreign and local visitors do not fail to see. If you were to make a stop at the museum, you will be in awe with the metal cages, large blown-up size photos and a lot of monitors recordings that continuously show the replays from the scenes in apartheid. It also bears a grey concrete floor, red brick walls, in a double volume ceiling.
The Hector Pieterson Museum, located in Orlando West, Soweto in South Africa. It is a large museum named in Hector Pieterson’s honor after being shot and killed just two blocks away from the museum’s location. Museum Africa holds the city’s history so to speak. Johannesburg Art Gallery contains figurative paintings, several European landscape and South African forms of landscape as well. The Market Theatre is a complex established venue for Modern African playwriting and for phenomenal anti-apartheid stage plays. It was later notarized in the year of 1970 and 1980 during the height of those stage plays.
There are also amusement parks and zoos that are equally exciting to see, like the Gold Reef City which is located south of Central Business District. It can accommodate an extremely large number of people, both local and foreign, considering its large size for an amusement park. The Johannesburg Zoo is one of Johannesburg’s and South Africa’s largest zoos.
Johannesburg is a city that is rich in history, art, culture and its people are the ultimate part of its successes. It had become a dynamic transmission of most large-scale industries among its other neighboring regions.
